Counseling at ISL
The Role of the School Counselor:
The counselor offers information, consultation, and support to the whole school community. Counselling allows the student to better understand him or herself in order to change emotional, cognitive, social, and behavioral patterns that are causing them pain, confusion or difficulty. The counselor can recommend outside resources to support the student where appropriate.
The counselor also works to increase the overall well-being of students in the school by educating about social, emotional and psychological health and creating transitions programs for incoming and leaving students.
Confidentiality
Because an important aspect of the counseling relationship is trust, it is important students feel safe to share feelings and information. Information shared within the counseling meeting is not shared with others. General goals or progress may be discussed with pertinent parties to support the student but the content is confidential. If the student indicates that harm to someone is imminent or likely, either harm done to the student or harm the student intends, this must be reported to ensure everyone’s safety
Accessing Services:
Parents, teachers, and students are welcome to contact the counselor by email, phone, or by stopping by the counseling office during drop-in hours to make an appointment. Students may also be referred to the counselor when teachers are concerned about a student.
Drop-in hours
Monday, Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday before and after school, recess and lunchtimes.
